have I bought a fake canon lens?
I recently bought a canon 28-135mm canon lens on ebay for a good deal of £240 from a company called photo direct, i am now questioning if it is a genuine canon lens. Firstly the lens did not come with its original packaging just in a plain white box with bubble wrap. Secondly when watching a review on YouTube someone said the outside of the lens is metal which in my case is definitely plastic. I am now very worried that I have picked up a fake lens! It looks identical to the original
my lens also doesn't say 'Made in japan' on it which is what i've seen on most photogrpahs
I doubt it is fake. A lot of times, the white box ( and the price) is a tip off to it being a "grey market" (or "imported) lens. The price you paid (£240/$388.24USD) is about right for the lens you bought for the import version.

The biggest issue with "grey market" items is the warranty handling. You will need to send it back to who you bought it from for any issues/repairs, whereas with an OEM lens Canon will handle the repair directly with you. It used to be Nikon would not repair any "grey market" items warranty or not.
