Art Paper Variety
Making an art portfolio.. how long does it take?
Hi, i'm a high school student going into my senior year in the fall (september). I'm interested in going into an art school for university after graduation, and just wondering, how long does making an art portfolio take? for uni?
I just keep feeling like i don't have enough time to make one up (10-15 pieces of art work)
and, does it really have to have a lot of variety?
I do art mostly on paper (drawing, painting, etc). I don't usually do sculptures or.. 3-D art, graphic, and the whole works.
The websites say you have to do a variety.
what exactly does that mean?
Can i just do a bunch of drawings and paintings in diff medias (water color, oil, acrylic, pastel, charcoal, etc), or is that not enough variety? Do i need more diversity (and make for example, 3-D art?)

For a portfolio, ignore "variety" and put your best work in it. Honestly portfolio reviewers like variety because it shows that you're versatile. BUT your best comes first. If you make something you aren't used to but it's not as good as what you like to do, put the better piece in your portfolio. Depending on the pieces, 10-15 sounds about right for a university entry.
Drawing and painting are the bases for 3-D art and other stuff. It's THE most important. It's the foundation. Don't worry if you don't have that stuff.
There's a lot a factors that decide how long it will take to put it together. It takes as long to make as it takes you to put your things together or make new things to add to it. How much of your day to you want to devote to it? Are you going to add anything new? If you don't want to make anything new to add and only use the things you already have, you could have the whole thing together in a few days. Don't assume it will take you say, 3 days and wait until that's all the time you have. Don't procrastinate over it. Just start working on it and it will come together.
